Golden Dragon, Taj Coromandel, Nungumbakkam, Chennai

13:13:00

The Golden Dragon at the Taj Coromandel is one of the oldest restaurants in the hotel. The restaurant was launched around the time when the hotel was opened to business in 1975. The Menu here has stood the test of time with a few additions and deletions whenever a new Chef had taken over the reins. But few dishes have been immortalized on the pages of Golden Dragon Menu such as Kung Pau Chicken and Peking Duck.

In a bid to re-invent itself, the restaurant has brought in a new chef. Master Chef Lian. He is not much of a talker, but he lets his food do the talking. I must say I was floored with his cooking. Dish after dish was a home run.

Food:

The first dish to be served was the Dimsum - Duo of Asparagus, a dumpling with very subtle flavors, this makes you wonder that a dimsum can be tasty even with light flavors.

The next to be served was the Qiling Fish with Sichuan Toban Djan Sauce. I would recommend this dish to anyone who is to dine here. It was just divine.

Next came the Lotus Stem Chengdu Style, which was slightly different from the usual super crispy version. This was mildly crispy yet loaded with chili.

Next was the North Atlantic Steamed Scallop with Pickled Chili. I sure loved it. The steamed scallops were just perfect. The sauce rich in pepper and chili had a unique flavor. A word of caution is to not bite on the chili. They are quite spicy.

Following the scallops we were served the Crispy Tiger Prawns with Chili Butter Garlic. OMG! this is not to be missed. The prawns are gigantic and crispy fried. Its a pure melody. Another dish which should be surely be tasted. I am pretty sure this is gonna become a sure dish on their menu.

Following this we were served Spicy Mahti Chicken which was infused with Sesame and was mildly spicy.

Next was the veg version of the Steamed Scallop. The scallops was replaced with mushroom. The mushroom were cut into long threads like a noodle. It was just as good as the scallops version. Again a word of caution on the chilli. They were quite spicy.

Next up was the Crispy Lobster Chili Butter Garlic. The meat was made into small morsels and crispy fried, and served with the shell which tasty and eye catching. A brilliant dish!

Finally the last of the appetizer. This was the duck served katti roll style ( Aromatic  Duck). The pancakes are taken first and coated with the sauce. Next up the veggies are loaded following which the duck is placed and you wrap it into a roll then dig in. A Chinese take on our katti roll. Simply Yumm!

Finally we got to dig into the main course. Vegetable Hakka Noodle, Jimling Style Jasmine Seafood Fried Rice served along with Chicken in Peanut Sauce, Stir Fried Tofu and Steamed Okra in Soya Garlic Sauce.

If it was me I will be content with the Chicken in Peanut sauce and Steamed Rice. The combination was heavenly. The noodle was simple and neat but the flavor were elevated with the Tofu. Something the veg eaters will love. Seafood fried rice was another hit among the group.

We finished our meal with Sticky Toffee Pudding and Basil Ice Cream. Through decadent dessert which is not to be missed.

Ambiance:
It is a mix of old world with Chinese design with a Taj Twist.

Price:
A meal for two would cost Rs 5000/- and upwards depending on the number of specialty dishes ordered.

The Box Project, Woods Road, Chennai

18:16:00

Food Courts in Chennai started way back with the 1st Planet Yumm! I remember it very distinctly, getting a place to sit used to be a big thing. People used to flock to Planet Yum in Spencers Plaza and in Anna Nagar. The concept of having the opportunity to dine in multiple restaurants in a single location to full fill the unique taste buds of everyone in the family. But the fad soon disappeared. People started returning to the standalone restaurants. Nowadays we find these restaurant aggregation mainly in Malls.

To recreate the euphoria again in a standalone place, restaurant aggregators have started exploring newer and newer concepts to catch the eye of the young and hep population. One such concept is The Box Project in Woods Road.

Box Project as the name implies, is boxes of restaurants. Concept is to take old shipping containers revamp em to take in a nice cozy kitchen and Vola! you have Box Project. They look really really cute and also as the shipping containers are re-purposed they are recycled for use.

The Box Project has options to cover all the basis. Chaat stall in the form of the Brunch, Idly and Dosa from Little Idli, Juices in the form of Goli Soda, Chinese dishes from Tago, Succulent Kebabs from Hatimy's and finally Desserts from The Waffle Place.

Food:
Since I was invited over along with a friend we settled on  the restaurants serving us one or two of their best dishes to sample. Down below is my experience on the same.

We started the proceedings with Goli Soda & Yummy delicious Sambhar Idly in Mud Pot from Little Italy. I have not had such a kind of idly preparation before. Apparently it is a specialty in Andhra, something which I have never heard before. I usually relate Andhra to the spicy food. The idly is broken drown to upma consistency topped off with hot Sambhar, spices, nuts and ghee. It tastes more like kitchida than sambhar idly. But a brilliant dish, I would say.

Next up we had the Muruku Cheese Sandwich from Brunch, which was neat.

After this we got to sample the Tago Fried Chicken and Tago Bento Box. Tago Fried Chicken was oriental version of crispy fried chicken. The Bento box had the Fried Rice, Pepper Coleslaw and Chicken Redang Curry a very good bento box. You get to have all the items.

Now coming to the stand-out part. The following items were served from Hatimy's. Each dish was one level better than the other. We start with the Kheema Samosa. Muslim household style wholesome samosa. I would not mind gobbling down a couple. Then came the Hatimy's Spl Crispy Chicken. Totally different take, superb concept. Using wonton paper to give the crispy texture.

After this we had the showstoppers. Shanghai Mutton Chops and Iranian Chicken Leg. My - o - My! Fusion food at its best. Using chinese spices to cream cheese to amp up the taste in tender mutton chops. Mind blown!  Iranian Chicken leg is the epitome to kick-ass. I would definitely be going back for this.

I heard about the eid - iftar combo plans. It sounds amazing, cant wait to try them out.

Finally we finished off with Veg Sandwich from brunch and Waffles & Mini Pancakes from That Waffle Place.

Ambiance:
The Box Project does well to aggregate different cuisines in a open air atmosphere. The Box Project  has car & bike parking next door.

Service:
NA

Price:
A meal here for two should cost around Rs 600 to 800/- depending on the order.

Pan Asian, ITC Grand Chola, Guindy, Chennai

09:12:00

I have been a big FAN of the food at Pan Asian. Yes Yes! I have not made post about it on my blog. But the restaurant had made me rethink the Asian style of food. Gone was the simple noodles, rice and sides. All thanks to the brilliant Chef Vikramjit. Having had two renditions with Chef where he set the bar really high for Asian fare my idea of having a simple asian meal was lost.

Yes! I know I would have loved it if Chef Vikramjit had stayed back in Pan Asian, but now that he has moved to Tian at ITC Maurya to much grander stage, Chennai was left with void which needed to be filled. Vola! ITC brings in Chef Ashish Singh to fill the space.

So I was invited to a Chef's table along with the bunch of other foodies from Chennai to pick Chef Ashish's brain over a delicious Sunday Brunch.

Food:
The brunch started off with a Fantastic Sashimi served on Bed of Ice accompanied by Salmon and Sea Urchin garnished with Shisho Leaf and Hanaho and the piece of resistance - Fresh Wasabi! There was many firsts for me with respect to this dish - Sea Urchin & seeing a freshly grated Wasabi. Sea Urchin - Big Fan!

Next to be served was the Sichuan Style Crispy John Dory. I did a small google search on the Mr. John Dory. Pictures depicted a grumpy lil fish. I wonder how a grumpy bugger became a tasty lil sucker.

Next was another first for me a Scallop and Salmon with a bit of Roe. It was an another stunner. In between all this I was served a Green Tea - Iced Matcha which was quite brilliant.

Next was Robatayaki in two forms. Veg was made with char grilled Avocado - simply brilliant. Not been a big fan a Avocado but in this form I did love it. Non-veg, the Char Grilled Black Cod was sensational.

Up next was a beautifully caramelised Duck wrapped in Nama Uba paper. Some foodies did not seem to agree with me. But I loved it. The duck was followed by a Lamb chop served with the cigar style Vanilla puff pastry. The Puff pastry was fantastic, the lamb was tender but I did not quite like the muttony taste which accompanied it.

Final dish part of the appetiser was the Tuna Sushi & Prawn Sushi both excellent and was mouthwatering plus eye watering with the wasabi.

After finishing the many courses of Appetizers I was nearly stuffed, and also I had to head back to work. So I began to inhale the mains rather than enjoying it.  For mains we were served with a bento box of sorts. I loved the Jasmine Rice served along with the yellow curry sea bass and the Wok tossed Lamb. The noodles which came with the lamb was a tad bit dry. I skipped the desserts as I headed back to work.

Overall the meal felt different with platting & presentation taking the centre stage and the antics pushed to the back burner. Looks like Pan Asian is in safe hands.

Ambiance:
It is not your regular chinese restaurant fare. Rather a contemporary mix of wood and fine lighting to go with the kind of gastronomical journey which we undergo with the meal.

Price:
This sit down Sunday brunch costs Rs 3300/-  per head.
