New Town Cafe, TTK Road, Alwarpet - A CFG Showcase

15:14:00

Ahhh!! Finally, a New Town Cafe right inside the city. The one place I have been waiting to see close by and not on ECR alone. I was here for a CFG Showcase. The new outlet has opened up at the food street of Alwarpet, TTK Road. The ambiance at the new outlet is totally different from the one at ECR. Rich new age decor with amazing sound system.

Food:
The meal started off with Chicken and Okra soup for the non-veggies and Minestrone soup for the veggies. Guess mixing okra with non-veg items has become a fashion. I did not get to sample the veg soup, but heard the others give a positive feedback. As for the non-veg soup, this was just perfect. Pieces of okra inter dispersed with loads of chicken pieces.

The first starter to arrive was the Mezze platter. This is a cold platter with soft pita bread and hummus. The hummus was well made, in-fact one of the best. It also had some finely diced fresh veggies drizzled with lemon.

The next dish to arrive was the Asparagus and Mushroom vol au vent. For those who dont know what a Vol au vent is - it is typically a puff pastry of French origin which is circular in shape. Our Vol au vent was stuffed with a mixture of asparagus and mushroom. It was a combination of crispy outer with soft mussy filling. There was also a Refried Beans in Taco Shells. This was something which I skipped.

The starters for non-veggies started with Chicken Satay. Since I have had the same at the other outlet, I felt it still maintained the flavors. Next was the Tenderloin Teriyaki Skewers. WOW! is the word which best describes it. The beef was a really soft and full of flavors. It was served with Bok Choy. The combination was perfect. I would recommend this dish for true beef lovers.

Finally the famous Cheese Stuffed Drumstick Mughali Style. This is the best dish I have had on their menu. A piece drumstick deboned and stuffed with a mixture of chicken and cheese, served along with a Mughali style gravy. A big thumbs up to this dish. An absolute must have. The last starter to arrive was Mutton Murtabak. This dish is an stuffed parotta with a fancy middle eastern name. I have attached a close up picture of the same to show the amount of filling. This was the first properly spicy dish to be served. Point to be noted, it was well worth it.

After a half a dozen starters in my belly we moved to the main course. I skipped tasting the veg mains as I was beginning to feel a full. The veg mains served were Dry Pan Mee, Crispy noodles with 5 spice veggies, veg. grilled sandwich and finally Roti Canai with Veg Curry. I am a big fan of the Roti Canai with non-veg curry so I mixed up a little of the roti with some non-veg dish. The roti was soft and made me wish, for a non-veg curry.

The non-veg mains started with the Curry Mee. I am not a big fan noodles dunked in spicy soup, so I would not be the best to comment on it. The next was the Sago Tawa Fish. This was served along with Tandoori Aloo. The fish was fresh, spicy and tasty, the way I like it.

Next up was the Nasi Lemak Chicken Rendang. This is one dish, which I have not had before and I was surprised as to why I had missed out on this. It is best had with all the ingredients mixed together. A little of steamed rice, with kadala (nuts), boiled egg, fried chicken and anchovies. A mouth of this mixture is an absolute nirvana. Finally the last of the main was the Shell less Crab meat with Kothuparata. The crab was almost shell-less. The dish was a little on the sweeter side and I just hoped it had a bit of spiciness to compliment the parata.

After munching on various dishes, I hardly had any space in my tum to have full portion of the desserts. So I went about sampling the various dishes served to us. We were served with Roti Bomb, Orange Chocolate Mud Pie, Apple Crumbled Tart, Mango Mascarpone Pannacotta and Espresso Creme brulee.  The only dessert which I liked was the Roti Bomb, the others were just passable. Roti Bomb which is a parotta cut down to small pieces and loaded with milkmade. Felt it was the cut above the rest. Overall the entire meal was just fabulous.

Ambiance:
The Ambiance here is totally different from the one at ECR. This one has more of a lounge kind of style with superb music. A big thumbs up to the audio system here.

Price:
A meal for two should end up costing around Rs 1200- 1500.

New Town Cafe is located in TTK Road opposite to Indian Terrain and Nike showrooms.

Chao, Thiyagaraya Nagar, T - Nagar

23:27:00

I usually do not write a post about the same place within a short time. But the last time I was at Chao, I was invited for a Chef's table and none of the dishes served were part of the menu. So this post is totally different from the previous post.

Food:
We were seated in a nice cozy sofa on the ground floor. The reservation which had made did help us in a getting a good seat. Since I was here previously, the company with me wanted me to place the order.

We started the meal with Lung Fung Chicken Soup for all. Lung Fung is more a chinese soup than a thai soup. It was a medium thick soup with egg, carrot, boneless chicken and green veggies. The soup was perfect or perfect-indianized. For starters we had Chicken Satay, nice, but nothing outstanding about it.  But the Devils Chicken and Wasabi Prawns were fabulous. Devils Chicken is a crispy fried sweet and hot chicken. Reminded me of crispy fried lamb. While the Wasabi Prawns was the best I have ever had. In-fact we ordered an extra portion of the Wasabi Prawns. To wash down the food we had ordered Fresh Lime Soda and Lime-mint Cooler.

For the main course we ordered a Thai Chili Fish to go with Chicken Char Kway Teow and Wok Fried Chili Chicken to go with Chicken Rice with Garlic. Of the lot only the Thai Chili Fish were not to our liking. The rest deserve a big thumbs up! Fabulous flavors. Chicken Char Kway Teow, which is rice flat noodles with veggies, egg and chicken inter dispersed in it. The noodles by itself was amazing, sweet and spicy. While the Thai Chili Fish was fresh, but it just wasn't upto our expectations. The combination of the Wok Fried Chili Chicken and Chicken Rice with Garlic was fantastic. The best I have had. We were so full with all the wonderful food, that we skipped the dessert.

Ambiance:
As I had mentioned in my earlier post. This place packs the oomph factor to blow you away.

Service:
Service was quite nice. The waiters were quite good at explaining the dishes and they helped us all through out the meal.

Price:
The meal for 4 cost us Rs 5100/- A bit pricy but the meal was well worth the money spent.

Food - 7.5/10
Ambiance - 8/10
Service - 8/10
Price - 7/10

Chao, Thiyagaraya Nagar, T-Nagar - A CFG Showcase

17:04:00

I am not a big fan of Thai cuisine and quite frankly, I have never had anything Vietnamese. So this CFG Showcase was more of a learning curve for me at the Chao, Thiyagaraya Nagar.

Chao is a spanky looking fine dine restaurant which dishes out Thai, Vietnamese and Singaporean Cuisine. If one of you guys out there are looking to surprise your GF, this place does have the oomph factor to wow her.

Food:
This session was more like a Chef's table, and we were knocked out by the food dished to us. The dinner started with a round of Soup, Sup Ayam for the Non-veggies and Sup Sayur for the veggies. Both are technically the same except for the addition of Chicken to Sup Ayam. The soup hit the spot!

This was followed by Crispy Corn with Spinach, the combo of the Spinach with the Corn was fabulous, crispy at its best. Next came the Namprik Gai which is stir-fried Chicken with chilli, garlic, onion. A very zingy dish, I would sure make a note of it and order the next time I am here.

Next dish which was served was the Poached Bok Choy with Garlic. Bok Choy is essentially a Cabbage which is much smaller in size than the ones which we are used to. Bok Choy was perfectly poached to maintain the juiciness with a load of garlic sauce. I have heard of the Non-veg version with the Chicken as a part of the ingredient on TLC Channel. But this was the first time I had tasted it. Must say it was full of flavors, rich in every possible way.

Next up was the Braised Broccoli with Tofu. This is one vegetarian dish which I would not mind having again. The Tofu had a texture which was almost similar to that of the Chicken. The flavorful sauce went well with the Nasi Kunning. Nasi Kunning quite literally in Indian cooking is Thenga Soru ( Coconut Rice) with a Malaysian name to it. It tasted just the way my Grandmom makes.

While the veggies relished the load of veg dishes, we were served with Choo Chee Goong. This is a proper Thai dish. The dish acquires its name due to the noise it makes while cooking which is sounds like Chooooo Cheeeee!!! A proper prawn lovers delight. Small size prawns cooked in red curry and coconut milk with loads of ginger and pepper. This turned out to be a fabulous combo with Drunken Noodles with Bang Bang Salad. The Drunken Noodles is a Thai twist to Chinese noodles with loads of soy sauce, garlic and stir fired. Finally there was the T.Shanghai Chicken. The 'T' is silent. Its like "Tsunami ". Just like the Tsunami it did pack the punch. Heavenly chicken with garlic and ginger masala.

After having a course of meal which was fit for the royal. We finished off the meal with Chocolate Mousse with Orange Chantalay & Strawberry in Red Wine. This was one hell of a rich, divine chocolate overload. What a way to end a killer dinner.

Ambiance:
As I had mentioned earlier this place packs the oomph factor to blow you away.

Price:
A meal for two should cost around Rs 1500- 2000/- odd. But it is definitely worth the price.
