Sterling Resort Restaurant, Valley View, Kodaikannal

Kodaikannal is one of the most sort after summer retreats in Tamil Nadu. It has people pouring in from almost all parts of India and also from foreign destinations. Kodaikannal is preferred for its right balance of weather and serene scenic beauty. The only way to reach here is through the road. Thankfully the roads have improved over time.

On my recent visits here, we stayed at the Valley View Branch of Sterling Resorts. The drive here from the Kodaikannal town center is breathtaking, with wall of rocks on one side of the road and the amazing view of the valley on the other side of it. It looks wonderful during the day. But definitely a nightmare during the night with no lights on the road, the only thing guiding you might be your cars headlamps.

On arriving here from the flat lands around noonish, we were all very hungry. Added to the hunger, I was having an empty stomach after a few rounds of motion sickness during the ascent. I was very keen on eating at some food joint of which I had enquired about from my friends on CFG. But the company of people were against driving into town and wanted to dine at the restaurant in the resort.

We headed into the restaurant expecting to have the buffet, but the buffet section was closed off for a private party. So we headed into the ala carte section and sat down. We were the only ones in the restaurant since it was off season. Since we were a large group of 20, we sat down as 2 different groups.

We started off the proceedings with a Sweet Corn Chicken Soup. The soup was thin and lacked flavor. Adding salt and pepper did not help. For starters we had ordered a plate of Tandoori Chicken. On arrival we found the chicken a tad under cooked. So we sent the dish back and asked them for a proper done chicken. When we recieved the dish after cooking for a few minutes, most of the pieces looked charred leaving a very few edible portion. I got myself a Chicken Sizzler. The dish had one leg piece and was stuffed around with vegetables. I bearly got to taste the chicken as the portion was small and the group around me was large. The chicken smelt like  it had been stored for a few days. For main course we decided to split, and went with Egg Fried Rice and Mutton Rogan Gosh and Paneer Butter Masala. The Egg Fried Rice was decent and was more upto the standards of a fried rice served in a college canteen. The gravy of Mutton Rogan Gosh was spicy and helped compliment the weather. The mutton was a little chewy but still mostly edible. Paneer Butter Masala too was decent, but the paneer also kind of had the stored smell to it. We had also ordered for a vegetable starter but right now I am not able to recollect its name or flavour.

The entire meal for a group of 8 in our table cost us Rs 3200. All in all the entire meal was a total let down. Hope the food is better atleast during the  tourist season.
