Asha's, Mall of Emirates, Dubai

16:45:00

Short visit to the Mall of Emirates at Dubai meant a pit stop at India's Iconic Singer's restaurant Asha's. Even though tons of Indians whom I had spoken to, had rated it as a highly westernised indian food, I was not put off, as one whiff of the aroma when I had walked past one of the restaurants outlets at Yas Mall was enough to lure me in. Coming back to this meal

Food:
They served up some tasty papads along with sweet mango pickles which we binged on while we waited for our food. My mom wanted to slurp on a Lassi. So we got her Mango and Caramel Lassi which was definitely slurppy. Salty Lassi complemented by the sweet Mango and Caramel.

For starters we ordered a Speciality Platter which contained four pieces each of Murg Malai, Chicken Tikka and Gosht Seekh Kebabs. All the three kebabs were mildly spiced unlike the ones we get here in India. Off the lot, I loved the Gosht Seekh Kebab inspite of it being mildly spiced. Murg Malai Kebab was more a hit and a miss. Some pieces were cooked properly while some others were a tad under cooked. Chicken Tikka felt highly westernised not the authentic type which I am used and was just passable.

Finally finished off the starters with the Jheenga Shan e Nisha. This was king prawns marinated in Yoghurt, Cheese and infused with cardamon and finally crispy fried. But that was not the kicker. The shocker came in the form of portion size which was just two pieces. Taste again not so great which was down to the mild flavour.

Moving to the main course we had the Dhaniya Murg, Dhal Makhani to go with Roti and the signature Kesar Biryani. Soft roti's with the simply outstanding Dhal Makhani, Yes!! Veg gravy was great. Dhaniya Murg which was chicken cooked in yoghurt and cashew nut gravy was another stunner. Despite it being a stunner combination, it was still mild for my taste. But I bet the Emeratis love it, because the restaurant was packed. We were too stuffed with this food and we skipped desserts.

Ambiance:
Typical to the mall style diner. Still had a few Indian touches to it.

Service:
We were served by Chap from Erode and I must say the service which was rendered to us was simply exemplary.

Price:
This meal here set back 420 AED for the four of us.

Food - 7/10 ( If you wouldnt mind Westernised Indian)
Ambiance - 7/10
Service - 9/10

Il Podio, Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi

12:39:00

Ok guys, all Chennai food fans will have to bear with me for a while, because Chennaisoru goes to Abu Dhabi begins here. My first stop was at Il Podio at Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi after an exhilarating ride on the worlds fastest roller coaster.

Food:
Since we were really hungry after the roller coaster ride, we wasted no time and went ahead and picked up the appetisers and desserts we wanted from the counters and placed an order for our main course. From the assortment of arabian sauces we picked the Hummus and Moutabel with a few pita bread. Main course we had Biryani with Butter Chicken Masala combo, Shish Taouk and Herbed Grilled Chicken. For finishing touches we had Coconut and Banana Caramel Cake.

Hummus with Pita bread was terrific. Move aside Indian made hummus. This is how a Hummus should taste. After sampling Hummus I had a bit of the pita bread with the Moutabel which was even better. In fact it was my moms first time at sampling the Moutabel, which became her instant favorite. Pita bread was light and soft.

Main course on the other hand was mixed bunch. The Biryani with Butter Chicken Combo was something which all Indians should give a miss. The Biryani was more like a tomato rice and the Butter Chicken was more like water with red colour and chicken pieces. We had to order an Indian dish because of my niece. This was followed by Shish Taouk which was mild and highly westernised, but no matter it was quite decent. The Herbed Grilled Chicken was really good. Very very mild and very very tender.

The finishing touches by the Coconut and Banana Caramel was pretty decent. The banana caramel really helped lift the flavors.

Ambiance:
Il Podio is the multi-cuisine food court situated in the Ferrari World

Service:
Part self service and part service was simply amazing.

Price:
This meal for four cost us 350 AED.

Ze Flavours, Pleasant Days, Sembarabakkam

14:31:00

Not always do you come across a multi-cuisine restaurant which is strong in all cuisines. I always thought them as a Jack of all trades, but never the best. So dining at Ze Flavours was a big revelation. Finally a multi-cuisine restaurant which was able to serve up fabulous dishes of all cuisines.

Food:
The meal started off with simple Lime Mint Cooler served as a welcome drink. This was followed by a sampler of sorts with Mushroom Vol Au Vent, Chicken Satay, Chicken Tikka, Lamb Sheek Kebab and finally Karuveppali Yera. Each fabulous in its own way.

My pick of the lot were the Prawns and the puff pastry Mushroom Vol Au Vent. This was followed by a Tom Yum Soup with Prawns as a base. It was a little spicy than I would have liked, but still fabulous.

This was followed by a palate cleanser of sorts in the form of Mango Sorbet which was a delight. Just as we were getting our taste buds tuned, we were served with main course sampler, which I really did not expect. Herb Crusted Halibut Fish, Prawns in Hot Garlic Sauce, Rack of Lamb on a bed of Spaghetti Arrbiata.

The Herb crusted fish was fresh and mildly spiced. The Prawns was the star dish here. Loved its flavours. It was scrumptious. At this point I was on the verge of being stuffed. But I ploughed along. The spaghetti was Al Dente with the fresh Arrabiata sauce lending tons of tomato goodness.

The lamb of rack which was served along with the pasta was simply juicy and tender. A slight slit and it falls of the bone. Finishing the main course sampler we were served with Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Naan, which was just divine. I do not think one can go wrong with this combination.

By the end of the main course it was abundantly clear this multi cuisine restaurant had just flexed its muscles to serve up dishes of almost all cuisine which were praise worthy. Finally we were served with a Tiramisu with a twist and Vanilla Ice Cream. Tiramisu was quite different here thanks to switching of ladyfingers with sponge cake. The coffee flavour was infused into the cake which gave depth to the dish.

Ambiance:

The interiors were simply fabulous. On par with a 5 star hotel. I am sharing a few shots of the location which I had obtained by doing a google search about the property. I thought one must see it to actually understand the grandeur. Also if one would wish to wow their companion on a date, do consider this location.

Price:
A meal for two should range between Rs 1500 - 2000/-. which seems in line with most star hotels.

Ze Flavours is located inside Hotel Pleasant Days which is a property adjacent to Queensland Amusement Park.

Beach Club, Neelankarai

21:20:00

Good food and a fantastic time with friends can put a big smile on one's face. This is true of the great  time I had at Beach Club, Neelankarai recently. Met up with my friends for our weekly get together at Beach Club, post Iftar. On entering we were all floored by the ambiance it had to offer outdoors. While the the indoors was just plain jane in comparison. Unfortunately for us, we group of six could not get a table outdoors and had to settle indoors.

Food:
They had a nice buffet set up for dinner which looked really inviting. So we chose to go ahead with it.   The meal started off with Corn soup with Chilli Chicken being served on the table. Interesting use of Chilli chicken being shredded into pieces for the soup. Yummm! it was. Moving along I tried my hand at 'Make your own Salad'. Went about adding lettuce, cucumber, black olives, loads of cheese, croutons and finally from their selection of sauces, the yoghurt sauce. It was one tasty salad, thanks to the yoghurt sauce which was fantastic.

Moving along we were served with a welcome drink - Lime Mint Cooler which was really nice. The main course was spread across the hall. I tried sampling as much as possible, but failed to do justice to  the spread as I felt full rather quickly.

The standout dishes were the Chicken Biryani, which was fantastic. One of the best star hotel type biryani I have had in a long while, Stir Fried Fish which was simply spectacular, Crispy Chicken Wings which was good as well. Finally the Pomphet Fish gravy which went well with the Kerala Parotta and white rice. I did sample a bit of the veg dishes as well, but the things which stood out were the Baked Veggies and the Veg Spring rolls.

Finishing the main course I was too stuffed, but I tried sampling the desserts. Vanilla Ice Cream was served on the table while the rest were to be picked from the buffet counter. All in all a very decent fare.

Ambiance:
I cannot talk enough about the outdoor ambiance as I am out of words. It was simply fabulous. We were all floored. If one were to look to take your female companion for an amazing date, look no further.

Service:
Since it was a buffet, not much to complain here.

Price:
The dinner buffet was priced at Rs 800/- including taxes, which I feel is terrific value for money.

Copper Kitchen, Saligramam - Iftar Pack 2015

13:07:00

My 2nd Iftar Pack for this Ramadan season was from Copper Kitchen. Picked this one up from their Saligramam outlet. They have retained the design of the box from 2013, which was quite nice to begin with.

Moving to the box contents.

Grape Juice - 1
Bottle Water (200ml) - 1
Haleem - 1
BBQ Chicken - 1
Mutton Biryani - 1
Chicken Kothu parotta - 1
Dates - 2
Assorted Fruits - 1
Kheema Samosa - 1
Kheema Roll - 1
Raita - 1
Gulab Jamun - 1

The box is priced at Rs 199/- net

First this box has had some items deleted from it since the 2013 and hence the mark down on the price. At Rs 199/- it was fantastic value for money for the dishes it is loaded with.

The positives first. I loved the Grape Pulp Juice. It was fantastic. Absolutely refreshing! The Haleem was really nice and almost comparable to the Sea Shells Haleem. The quantity served in the box is quite less, but never the less it was tasty. Also a huge improvement over their previous attempts. BBQ chicken was juicy and tasty.

Kheema Roll and Samosa were decent in-spite of it being a little dry. Chicken Kothu Parotta had loads of flavour, but sadly I could not consume more than a few spoonfuls as it was spicy hot. I strongly believe they should reduce the spiciness of the Kothu Parotta as consuming spicy food at the time of Iftar is quite difficult.  Finally the finishing touches with Gulab Jamun was quite nice.

My only gripe with this Iftar box was their Mutton Biryani which was way off the mark. It tasted more like ginger rice.

Smaller but significant touches which I liked were the small fork given for consuming the assorted fruits and also separate pack containing cutlery, tomato ketchup, paper tissue, toothpick and mouth freshener.

This box is fit for a consumption by a single person only. But for the price it is well worth it.

Friends Restaurant, Karaikudi

11:46:00

Wish there is a guide like Zomata for small towns as well. If there was one like that I would have quite clearly stayed clear of this restaurant. Yes the only chance to dine out at Karaikudi was ruined all thanks to Friends Restaurant. This restaurant came highly recommended by a friend of mine who had dined over a year ago but I guess the restaurant has taken a dive for the worse.

Food:
It was a Sunday and we entered the restaurant around 2pm and were waiting to place our order. Meal started off with a disappointment when the waiter said it is closing time and not all the dishes were available. Since we were really hungry and did not want to hunt for another joint we went ahead and ordered our meal.

7 Chicken Biryani
2 Scrambled Eggs
2 Prawn 65
1 Prawn Pepper Fry
1 Crab Pepper Masala
1 Fish Fry
2 Chicken 65
1 Meals
2 Bottles of Water
2 Bottles of 500ml Pepsi

We wanted Mutton Biryani which they informed  us, was over. So we swapped it for Chicken Biryani. When the Biryani was served it was really cold, they didn't even make an attempt to heat 'em up before service. This really put us all off. Next Carb Masala did not feel really fresh. Scrambled Eggs and the Prawn 65 were the only saving grace, were decent.

Meals service was totally disappointing as the rice was dead cold and we had to keep calling them to serve rice and gravy.

Ambiance:
It looked pretty decent, but they definitely need to maintain it in a better manner.

Service:
They had only one waiter manning 4 tables. The worst bit was, he used his hands to serve the fish off from the plate and after a while had the same hand scratch his head. I was totally disgusted.

Price:
The meal for nine of us cost Rs 2980/-, not worth a single penny.

Sea Shells, Anna Nagar - Iftar Pack 2015

14:02:00

The holy month of Ramadan is here with Muslims all over the city fasting and mostly Iftar is a close family affair. But the current world scenario has changed to a great extent that everyone is held up at work. So the working man's on the go meal is what all the restauranteurs are targeting with the Iftar in a Box deal.

First up for this Ramadan month I decided to try out Sea Shells. Not much has changed here from the previous year's box. Apart from the yellow/green box turning purple. I wonder which brilliant mind at their marketing department changed the box. The color combo on their previous years box looked really upmarket. This I have no words.

The Box Contents:
Fresh Juice - 1 glass
Bottle Water - 1 (250ml)
Dates - 1
Assorted Fruits -1
Chicken Samosa - 1(Large)
Chicken Shawarma Roll - 1
BBQ Chicken - 1 piece
Kubus - 1
Kerala Parotta - 1
Haleem - 1
Mutton Biryani - 1
Chicken Gravy - 1
Mayo - small container

The entire box costs - Rs 320/-

Firstly the fresh juice served in the box was the Mango Juice which could be the perfect start to breaking a fast. I am guessing the juice is changed everyday based on the availability. The Chicken Samosa was large and tasty. I did not feel like sharing it.  Coming to Chicken Shawarma, this is by far the best shawarma which came out of an Iftar pack. Really juicy and loaded to the brim with chicken. BBQ Chicken with the Khubus was perfect. The chicken remained tender even though it was cool.

Haleem in this box is the best in the city this season. If you are a Haleem lover do not miss it. Perfect soft texture, combined with great flavor beats the other haleems hands down. Yes I have already compared it with the Haleem from Pista House. Link - http://goo.gl/VSUtlo

Biryani was quite decent. The only annoyance to me was the Chicken Gravy were the pieces were present with the fat.

Food - 8/10
Price - 7.5/10
